IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART · 19 October 2020 AT 6PM 131 92 John George Mulvany RHA (1766-1838) A FAMILY AT REST NEAR CARLINGFORD LOUGH, 1826-1834 oil on canvas signed lower left; inscribed on reverse 24 by 30in. (61 by 76.2cm) Frame size: 30.5 by 35.5in. (77 by 90cm.) Mulvany painted a series of large-scale canvases in the Carlingford area between 1826 and 1834 which he exhibited at the RHA. This picture, probably from this series, can be compared with his Figures Outside an Inn, near Carlingford Lough shown at the Gorry Gallery, Dublin in July 1999. The present picture shows a similar topography to the abovementioned work but portrays a more intimate scene of a family enjoying a pause between chores. The woman with the milk pail is repeated in both works, carrying only one pail in this scene. The seated gentleman rests on his wooden cart while the child drinks milk from a cup. John George Mulvany was born in Dublin about 1766 and was the elder brother of Thomas James Mulvany RHA (1779-1845) also a landscape and figure painter. He studied in the Schools of the Dublin Society where he won medals in 1782 and 1776. His first exhibit was in 1810 at the Society of Artists. He lived in North Richmond Street, Rutland Square and in 1823, on the foundation of the Royal Hibernian Academy, he became one of its original members. He exhibited regularly there from its first exhibition in 1826 until 1840 showing 42 works. The National Gallery of Ireland hold two paintings by Mulvany in their collection View of Kilmallock [NGI.991] and A Kitchen Interior [NGI.1277]. We are grateful to James Gorry of the Gorry Gallery for his kind permission to reproduce the note from his exhibition catalogue to ‘An Exhibition of 18th, 18th and 20th century Irish Paintings’, 1-9 July 1999. €800-€1,200 (£710-£1,070 approx.)
