Provenance: Gifted by the artist to Father Commins for sale, 1943; Private collection Accompanied by framed letter from the artist to Father Commins which reads: January 30 1943 Dear Father Commins, in answer to your note of a little while ago i have nowmuch pleasure in sending you an original drawing ‘By the Fire’. i would not like you to offer it for sale publicly at a less price than £10. The picture will be sent off on Monday next framed in a case and i will be very glad if you will see that the case is returned to Waddington’s (the sender) not because of the value of the case but because they are difficult to get now.
