80 50 Christopher Campbell (1908-1973) THE ESCORT oil on board signed lower right 24 by 35in. (61 by 88.9cm) Frame size: 31.5 by 44in. (80 by 112cm.) Provenance: de Veres, 21 November 2000, lot 358; Private collection A student of Patrick Tuohy’s at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and brother of the sculptor and medallist, Lawrence Campbell (1911-1964), Christopher Campbell is best remembered as a figure painter and stained glass artist. He worked for a period in Harry Clarke’s studio and later taught art at the Kilkenny Technical School (1947- 1951). A regular exhibitor at the RHA, his only solo exhibition was held posthumously at the Neptune Gallery, Dublin, in 1976. He contributed many illustrations to The Capuchin Annual in the 1950s to 1960s. The subject of this painting appears to be the arrest of a man, 4th from left, by plain clothes policemen and a uniformed constable, at the left of the scene, with a soldier armed with a rifle with fixed bayonet at the far right, and the prisoner’s wife and chidren in between. The scene could be during the War of Independence (1917-1921) or the Civil War (1922-1923) and was probably used as an illustration for an account of an historical event in The Capuchin Annual. €5,000-€7,000 (£4,440-£6,220 approx.)
