Provenance: Private collection, Scotland, since the 1890s; Thence by family descent to the present owners John Patrick Downie was born in Glasgow in 1871 to James Downie and Isabella Patrick. His father was a cotton manufacturer. He studied in London and in Paris and never married. He is sometimes confused with Patrick Downie born in Greenock of Irish descent in 1854 and who also died in 1945. John Patrick died in Glasgow on 4 April 1945 and is buried in the Glasgow Necropolis. He showed regularly at the Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and worked in Holland after studying at the Slade under Alphonse Legros in the late 1880s. His works can be found in Glasgow Museums, South Ayshire Council, Paisley Museum and Art Galleries and Rye Art Gallery among others. €200-€300 (£180-£270 approx.)
