(36.8 by 25.4cm) Dimensions of Frame: 20 by 15in. (51 by 38cm) Condition: The work has slipped slightly in the frame. There is some rippling of the canvas visible. This has not led to cracking or flaking of the paint. Exhibited: Belfast Art Society, 1927, catalogue no. 73 Presented in what appears to be its original late 1920s frame. This picture was shown at the Belfast Art Society in 1927 when the artist’s address is recorded as ‘182 Cliftonpark Avenue, Belfast’. It was one of six works exhibited by her that year. Miss Munce was a prolific exhibitor with the society from 1894 through 1929 from addresses in Atlantic Avenue and Ann Street in Belfast as well as the Cliftonpark address from 1916 until 1929. The 1901 census records her living at 26 in Atlantic Avenue (Duncairn Ward, Antrim), aged 33 years with her sister, brother and mother. Her birthplace - and her mother’s - are recorded as ‘Scotland’, religion ‘Methodist’, occupation ‘Artist and Painting’ and ‘not married’. It is clear from the scenes exhibited she was well travelled with topographical views from around Europe among her exhibits. A rare and lesser known artist, an oil painting by her, titled The Old Lacemaker (1914) can be found in the collection of the National Museums of Northern Ireland (catalogue reference: BELUM.
