AUTUMN ONLINE ART SALE - Ends Monday 5 October 2020 27 20 Salvador Dalí (Spanish, 1904-1989) THE DIVINE COMEDY, PARADISE, CANTO: 18, BEATRICE’S SPLENDOUR wood engraving; (no. 82 from an edition of 150) signed and editioned in blue crayon in lower margin 9.50 by 7.25in. (24.1 by 18.4cm) Dimensions of Frame: 27.5 by 23.5in. (70 by 60cm) Condition: The work is float mounted with raw edges showing. There is some creasing visible along the lower edge. There is a slight fold to the extreme upper left corner. Colours remain strong. There are no tears of rips apparent. Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy was illustrated by Dalí between 1951 and 1960 initially as a commission from the Italian government. He created 101 watercolours on the theme which were later reproduced using a wood engraving technique. Editions were published in French, Italian and German. Each woodblock from the series is part of a Canto or chapter.
