WHYTE'S EXCEPTIONAL IRISH ART MONDAY 7 DECEMBER 2020

EXCEPTIONAL IRISH ART ·7 DECEMBER 2020 AT 6PM 157 109 Rory Breslin (b.1963) MASK OF THE BANN bronze; (no. 2 from an edition of 3) 35 by 16in. (88.9 by 40.6cm) Condition: This work appears to be in excellent condition. The Mask of the Bann, the most jovial of all the River God series, is an adaptation of Edward Smyth’s Custom House keystone situated at the eastern end of the north-facade of the building. The moustache and beard hair droop in silky folds. A turban of linen-like folds envelope the head and it is crowned by what looks like flax. Redolent of the Bann’s well-known freshwater pearl fisheries, two loops of pearls are draped across the turban while beneath it clusters of flax seed pods frame the temples, cheeks and the engaging visage. The Bann’s basin was famous for the growing of flax and the weaving of linen and all the iconography that adorns the mask is evocative of the industry. €8,000-€12,000 (£7,110-£10,670 approx.)
