40 29 Terence John McCaw (South African, 1913-1978) DALKEY ISLAND FROM COLIEMORE HARBOUR, COUNTY DUBLIN oil on canvas titled on reverse; also inscribed with artist’s name and title on label on reverse 20 by 24in. (50.8 by 61cm) Frame Size: 27 by 31in. (68.6 by 78.7cm) Condition: This work appears to be in very good condition. Some minor cracking visible on close inspection upper left. This has not led to flaking of the paint. Terence John McCaw was an important figure within the Cape Impressionist movement in the early to mid-20th century in South Africa, which saw European trained painters seeking a new way to depict the landscapes of their native country. After his studies at the Wits Technical Art School, Johannesburg in the early 1930s, McCaw studied at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art and the Central School of Art in London in 1935 with his South African contemporaries, Freida Lock and Gregoire Boonzaier. The three artists participated in exhibitions with the London Group, and, once back in Cape Town, became founding members of the New Group in 1937. The New Group served as a forum for young South African artists for almost 15 years, presenting exhibitions throughout the country and providing rural communities with a taste of new artistic trends.
