WHYTE'S EXCEPTIONAL IRISH ART MONDAY 7 DECEMBER 2020

84 52 William Conor OBE RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968) WEDDING AT JOY STREET, BELFAST, c.1923 pastel signed upper left 32 by 28in. (81.3 by 71.1cm) Frame Size: 38 by 33.5in. (96.5 by 85.1cm) Condition: Some creasing visible throughout on close inspection. A pencil and crayon sketch for this work titled ‘Bridal Morning’ was purchased by Manchester Art Gallery in 1923. The artist wrote: ‘Bridal Morning’, is an impression of a wedding party just leaving the bride’s home, after the wedding breakfast. That the bridegroom is a well-to-do artisan is indicated by the fact that he can afford to have a ‘taxi’ for the wedding journey, whilst the cheerful interest shown by the assembled crowd of neighbours, is proof that even in a dingy city street ‘all the world loves a lover’. 1 An oil of the same scene titled ‘The Wedding’ was reproduced in the art magazine Colour (Nov/Dec Vol. 19.4-5 1923). This work was also exhibited as catalogue no. 33 at ‘William Conor 1881-1968’, The McClelland Galleries, Belfast, 1969. 1.
