This was unusual, as it did not normally open until the afternoon. As with most children of my age, my curiosity was aroused, and I went to investigate this new horizon of my expanding world. Taking the dog, I entered this strange room of mysterious objects. The collection in the art gallery consisted mainly of portraiture, landscape and still life paintings. There was one painting that I went up to almost instinctively. It was a study of a herring, hanging quite low on the wall, and I remember lifting the dog up to the painting so that he could smell the fish.” John Shinnors. €40,000-€60,000 (£34,480-£51,720 approx.)
