In the early 1800s a modest school of painting arose in Dublin, which favoured small landscapes, usually well peopled and studded with anecdotal interest. Of this school, the Sadlers were best known, in particular, William Sadler II. Along with his son William Sadler III and a number of studio assistants, he produced many such miniature landscapes, which as Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin have noted would have suited sumptuous Regency drawing-rooms, with their dark-coloured wallpaper providing “an ideal background for a myriad of tiny and medium-sized gilt-framed pictures” (Painters of Ireland, 2nd edition, page 194). €1,500-€2,000 (£1,290-£1,720 approx.)
