59 Louis le Brocquy HRHA (1916-2012) W.B. YEATS STUDY IN PURPLE 1991 aquatint on wove paper (no. 18 from an edition of 35) signed, dated and numbered lower right 22.50 by 16.50in. (57.2 by 41.9cm) Frame Dimensions: 38 by 30in. (96.5 by 76.2cm) Excellent condition. Sheet size: 20 by 22.25ins. These studies were later used for a medal design commissioned in 2006 by The Cultural Collection of Ireland, a jewellery manufacturer in Dublin. This image of Yeats, as it appears on the obverse of the medallion, formed part of a retrospective exhibition of the artist’s work in Kamakura, Osaka and Hiroshima, Japan, in 1991. The figure of W.B. Yeats, man and personality, have always inspired le Brocquy and have become a recurring theme throughout his body of work to date. The reverse of the medal displays another reference to Yeats, that of the horseman, and includes an appropriate citation from his self-composed epitaph. €2,000-€3,000 (£1,720-£2,590 approx.)
