10 17/18th Century 11 1710 (21 May) letter from Joseph Addison, Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland regarding Irish politics. Addressed to the Lord Lieutenant, Thomas, Marquess of Wharton, the letter refers to the election of a Speaker in the Irish House of Lords, and indicates that both houses of the Irish Parliament seemed pleased with Queen Anne’s government of Ireland. Probably in the hand of Addison’s secretary, Richard Tickell. Accompanied by a typewritten transcript. Condition: Light overall toning, tiny piece missing from lower right margin, text unaffected, very good. Joseph Addison (1 May 1672 – 17 June 1719) was an English essayist, poet, playwright and politician. With his friend, Richard Steele, he co-founded The Spectator magazine. In 1708 and 1709, Addison was a Member of Parliament for the borough of Lostwithiel. He was soon appointed secretary to the new Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, LordWharton. Under the direction of Wharton, he was an MP in the Irish House of Commons for Cavan Borough from 1709 until 1713.
