Condition: Mixed condition, fair to fine, generally very good. MacBride as Minister for External Affairs, typed with signature in ink, on his headed notepaper. Refers to the establishment of the Irish Embassy in Washington and the US Embassy in Dublin. 9.50 by 7.50in. (24.1 by 19.1cm) Condition: Folded, two staple holes, slight smudging top left , fine. Provenance: Archive of Congressman Michael J. Kirwan; Collection of John Jovich, USA. Dated January 30, 1950, McBride in his capacity as Ireland’s Minister for External Affairs writes a historic message to American Congressman Michael J. Kirwan. McBride relates, “The news has just been released to- day that the United States are raising the status of their Legation in Ireland to that of Embassy. We are, of course, in return raising the status of our Legation in Washington to that of Embassy also. I believe that this gesture together with the recent signing of the Treaty of Friendship, Commerce and Navigation between the United States and Ireland will improve the already excellent relations that exist between our two countries.” Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the Lenin Peace Prize, Sean McBride was founder of the republican/socialist party Clann na Poblachta.
