George Windus, born at Nutshaling, Hampshire, in 1780, enlisted with the 35th on 25 September 1813 for 7 years, and was discharged on 26 September, his period of service having expired. The 35th Regiment of Foot was raised in Belfast by Arthur Chichester, 3rd Earl of Donegall as the Earl of Donegall’s Regiment of Foot or the Belfast Regiment on 28 June 1701 to fight in the War of the Spanish Succession. The Earl of Donegall was killed in 1706 at the Siege of Barcelona and the regiment was renamed Gorge’s Regiment of Foot after its new commander, Richard Gorges. In 1717 it reverted to 35th Regiment of Foot, under which, based in Ireland, it served in The Seven Years War and The American War of Independence, after which it removed to England. In 1782 it was renamed the 35th (Dorsetshire) Regiment, under which name it served in the Napoleonic Wars including the Battle of Waterloo, and in 1832 became the Royal Sussex Regiment.
