20 18/19th Century 35 1802. A Theatrical Candidate cartoon by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), original drawing of Richard Brinsley Sheridan. Original ink and watercolour drawing. With a mock inscription “Publd. April 6th by Ludivico Scratchi, 1802”. A drawing of Richard Brinsley Sheridan seated at a desk on which are various letters from actors calling to be paid. A dishevelled actor stands in front of Sheridan pointing at him with his left hand. He holds a tricorne hat in his right hand. a scarce original drawing by Rowlandson. Engraved: cf. British Museum Satires 9086 Condition: Light overall toning, fine. Richard Brinsley Butler Sheridan (1751-1816) was an Irish satirist, playwright and poet, and long-term owner of the Theatre Royal, London. He is known for his plays including The Rivals, The School for Scandal, The Duenna and A Trip to Scarborough. He was also a Whig MP for 32 years in the British House of Commons for Stafford (1780–1806), Westminster (1806–1807), and Ilchester (1807–1812). He is buried at Poets’ Corner in Westminster Abbey. Documents signed by Lord Norbury ‘The Hanging Judge’ and related items. (9) The file contains 5 documents signed by Lord Norbury recording his opinion / advice on procedure etc. and includes two large documents detailing legal opinion on the affairs of his family, and an account of the funeral of his wife in a letter from JD Browne in 1822. 8 by 5in. (20.3 by 12.7cm) Condition: Generally very good, well conserved. Lord Norbury (John Toler, a native of Tipperary ), was known as the hanging judge”. Lord Norbury’s most notable trial was when he acted as judge at the trial of Robert Emmet in 1803.
