26 19th Century 48 1830 (5 November). Daniel O’Connell signature on the front of a letter. Signed bottom left on the front part of a letter from London to Nottingham with Post Office FREE datestamp. Accompanied by a print of O’Connell, published by Fisher, London, 1844 with O’Connell’s signature in the engraving. 3 by 5in. (7.6 by 12.7cm) Condition: The Free front is fine, the engraving is foxed and torn in the margin. Daniel O’Connell, as a Member of Parliament, was entitled to unlimited free postage, provided he signed the front of the letters. He was reputed to be one of the abusers of the privilege, often signing letters for friends, constituents, and donors to his political campaigns.
