38 Parnell 81 1888 (September) to 1889 (November). The Parnell Commission - a collection of drawings by Sir Frank Lockwood. A remarkable collection of ink drawings of characters and scenes from The Special Commission on Parnellism and Crime. Portraits include Sir Henry James, Sir Charles Russell, both 9 by 7 inches, and 65 smaller studies, mainly 5 by 3 inches, including Captain Plunket, Inspector Higgins, The Curtins (parents murdered), Captain O’Shea (Kitty’s husband), Tim Healy MP, Michael Davitt, W. Biggar MP, Pat Murphy QC, Sir RichardWebster QC MP (Attorney General), Mr Arthur O’Connor MP, Richard Pigot (the infamous forger), “Informers” including Delany, Burke, Le Caron, and Molloy, witnesses including Captain Boycott, Canon Griffith, Mr Hussey, Lady Montmorres, Edward Parnell MP, John O’Connor MP, etc. Also watercolours of witnesses entitled “The Corridor” and “The Courts”, 7 by 9 inches each, and a frontispiece or title, in ink and wash, “Report of the Parnell Commission by a Stuff Gownsman”. both With notes and letters,1975 and 1977, from FSL Lyons, Provost of Trinity College Dublin and an illustrated article by Lyons in The Irish Times. Condition: All the drawings are in foxed mounts and most of the drawings are foxed, slightly to heavily. 10 of the small drawings (none of them mentioned in our catalogue note) are probably beyond repair. Overall this is a very valuable artistic record of a sensational court drama with ramifications for politics in Ireland and Great Britain, and well worth restoration and conservation.
