The Shan Van Vocht monthly republican periodical edited by Alice Milligan. “A National Monthly Magazine”. Volume 1, Numbers 1 to 11, bound in dark green cloth gilt. Stories of the United Irishmen, 1798 Rebellion, Fenian Rising, etc. Condition: Some faults on first issue, binding shook with adhesive tape repaires, else very good. (4) Includes Irish Race Convention 1896 cards, 1904 United Irish League membership card for Alderman Daniel McCabe, later Lord Mayor of Manchester and St Patrick’s Day Banquet, Manchester, menu card. All with attractive vignettes. Condition: Race Convention cards soiled and water stained, UIL card and Patrick’s Day menu very good with some adhesions to reverse. Daniel McCabe was born in Stockport but spent nearly the whole of his life in Manchester. According to his contemporaries McCabe spoke with an Irish accent, even in middle age, reflecting the close-knit nature of the Irish community in this period. He was a staunch Roman Catholic. McCabe was active politically in both the Irish National League, where he was president of the Michael Davitt branch, and in the Liberal party, where he was vice-president of the North Manchester Liberal Association. McCabe was elected to the Manchester City Council in 1889 and in 1892 became a Justice of the Peace, only the second Roman Catholic to be so appointed. In November 1913 Daniel became Manchester’s first Catholic Lord Mayor. He was knighted and served as a Colonel in the Manchester Regiment in WorldWar I. Colonel Sir David McCabe DL died in 1919.
