64 1916 Rising 144 1916 (25 April) The arrest and imprisonment of Alderman James J. Kelly picture postcards. Two extremely rare real photo picture postcards, inscribed and signed by Kelly - “Taken in Dublin April ‘16 before my arrest “ and “Taken in London - immediately on my release fromWandsworth Jail and deportation In Error”, also an unused card showing a group of British Army offices at the Parnell Monument with the “captured rebel flag”. Kelly had been arrested by the infamous Captain Bowen- Colthurst who was responsible for the unlawful execution of Francis Sheehy Skeffington. Condition: Very fine. From a letter published in The Irish Times, 27 June 1915: ”His shop, not pub, was on the corner which became known as Kelly’s Corner and it was at these premises that the above incident happened. My grandfather was arrested with Dickson and McIntyre and also had nothing to do with the Rising as he believed in Home Rule. Fortunately, through some act of fate, my grandfather was not executed with the other unfortunates but was still wrongfully imprisoned in Brixton for 18 days with the threat of an execution hanging over him. Prisoner art - an enamelled half crown. A 1916 halfcrown coin, obverse with king's head and inscription worn down and replaced with a Tara Brooch design enamelled in gold white and green. Probably made by 1916 Rising prisoner in Frongoch camp or similar place of internment. Attractive and scarce.
