In May 2009 the Irish Museum of Modern Art celebrated his work with, ‘Hughie O’Donoghue: Recent Paintings and SelectedWorks from the American Ireland Fund Donation’. This was a major exhibition of twenty-seven works by the artist who has now a substantial body of work in the Irish national collection. Since the mid 1980s O’Donoghue has been exhibiting widely in prominent solo and group shows; especially successfully with the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin, James Hyman Gallery, London among many others. He is now represented by the prestigious Marlborough Gallery, London who were Francis Bacon’s dealers among other masters of the 20th century. The photographic element has a skin-like quality, which is physically integrated into the layered surface of the oil paint. In order to achieve the kind of density that I want, it is necessary to build the surface in a traditional way by superimposing layers of oil paint and exploiting the transparency and opacity of the medium. The photographic elements are trapped within these layers. I photographed the characters in some of the paintings in various scenarios on the land around the studio where I work in Ireland. One of the recurring themes of my work is memory and how it is constructed. I am interesting in both individual and memory and the larger cultural memory of societies. Memory is rarely accurate, but in my experience it is invariable true, in that it represents how we feel about things rather than what we know.
