30 21 Howard Helmick American, (1845-1907) DRUMMER AND DOG oil on canvas signed lower right 16 by 13.25in. (40.6 by 33.7cm) Frame Dimensions: 20.5 by 18in. (52.1 by 45.7cm) Cracking visible throughout. This is stable and has not led to flaking. Otherwise very good condition. Provenance: Enchéres Champagne, Montreal, 16 December 2020, lot 172; Private collection Howard Helmick was born in Zaneville, Ohio, USA, and studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. He moved to Paris in 1854 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts. He moved to London in 1872 and was a regular visitor to Ireland. He is best known for his Irish genre studies. Critics praised him as “an American Wilkie”. Helmick regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers, the Society of British Artists, and the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham. He also exhibited work at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool and at Manchester City Art Gallery. He was elected a member of Society of British Artists in 1879, and the Royal Society of Painters-Etchers and Engravers in 1881.
