48 37 William John Leech RHA ROI (1881-1968) ON THE HILL OF HOWTH oil on canvas signed lower right; inscribed on stretcher and with several inscribed labels on reverse 10.75 by 20in. (27.3 by 50.8cm) Frame Dimensions: 16.5 by 26in. (41.9 by 66cm) Some cracking visible on close inspection. This has led to flaking in places, most notably centre right and lower left. Provenance: Christie’s, London, 10 May 2007, lot 119; Private collection; Whyte’s, 28 April 2008, lot 98; Private collection Alternatively known as Gorse Bushes. In the original frame of Daniel Egan, Lower Ormond Quay, and with labels on reverse listing the artist’s address variously as 6 Victoria Villas, Morehampton Road (his address in 1909) and care of Lily Williams ARHA, 18 Lower Pembroke Street. An older label on reverse gives the title of another of Leech’s work, Le Sable Blanc, Concarneau, which was exhibited in the RHA in 1909. €8,000-€12,000 (£6,960-£10,430 approx.)
