40 27 Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958) A VILLAGE IN CONNEMARA, c. 1920 oil on panel signed lower right; titled on label on reverse 8 by 10in. (20.3 by 25.4cm) Frame Dimensions: 18.5 by 18in. (47 by 45.7cm) Cracking in the panel can be seen through the paint. The painted surface itself appears stable with intact impasto visible throughout. Some surface dirt visible. Otherwise very good condition. Provenance: Acquired from the artist by Lieutenant Colonel Frank Stanton of Quebec, Canada, circa 1920; Thence by descent The present owner writes: ”Lieutenant Colonel Frank Stanton was in Ireland after WorldWar I, around 1919-1920, where he was introduced to his future wife, Mary Preston of Gormanston, Co. Meath. It seems Colonel Stanton was exploring Ireland and it was in one of his trips that he met Paul Henry. I know that the artist invited Colonel Stanton to his studio and that is where he purchased six paintings, which he brought back to Canada with his fiancée. I know that three of them had windswept trees, two were larger landscapes and the last one was of an old man walking on some cobblestone street. I know that, circa 1936, Frank Stanton was in Ireland again, sightseeing with his wife. On that trip he met Paul Henry again - in a field where the artist was painting - and purchased another three paintings from him. The paintings were passed on to daughters, nephews or nieces that exhibited interest for a particular painting. His favourite daughter, Anne Stanton, received four, which she turned around later in life, giving one to each of her three nephews and one to her niece, who gifted it to her husband, the present owner. I can only hope that it goes back to Ireland where it belongs with a “windswept tree collector.” €60,000-€80,000 (£51,280-£68,380 approx.) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot27
