(80 by 80cm) Excellent condition. ‘Francis Tanseys Geometric hard edged colour field paintings, are achieved by applying many layers of transparent glazes, applied firstly by brush and then blended with a smooth roller to achieve a uniform surface finish, this process is repeated many times until the colour is saturated and vibrant. Opposite colours are used beside each other to excite and vibrate, causing an optical illusion. The colour is clean and blended across its frequency from light to dark to give its complete character. I developed this technique in the mid-eighties and have continued to push the process to new and more complicated levels since then. The painting Smouldering Red in Asymmetric Blue, the three primary colours set in a blue grid, this composition is organised in a irregular fashion in the central section, forcing the viewer’s eye to correct what it sees, producing an optical effect of movement. Together with the introduction of more green in the blue to excite the red values, hence the title of the painting.’ We are grateful to the artist for his assistance in cataloguing this lot. €1,800-€2,200 (£1,540-£1,880 approx.)
