188 168 August von Heckel (German 1824-1883) MOTHER AND CHILD BY FISHING NETS WITH MOUNTAINS IN THE DISTANCE, 1853 oil on canvas signed, inscribed [München] and dated lower left; signed again and dated on reverse; with ink stencil of Malerleinwand-Fabrik von A. Schutzman in München on reverse; also with partial exhibiton label with artist’s name, price [300 Thalers] and address [München/ 25 Ludwigstraße 25] on reverse 24 by 27in. (61 by 68.6cm) Frame Dimensions: 35 by 37.5in. (88.9 by 95.3cm) Stable condition. Some minor rubbing to edges at side, right. two specs of loss visible in figure’s red dress. Hairline cracking visible to figure and some in foliage. Slight impression to canvas visible in mountains near bird. Presented in what appears to be an original, ornate gilt frame; unglazed. Provenance: Private German collection; Thence by descent to the present owners Bavarian painter August von Heckel was born on 26 September 1824 in Landshut and died on 23 October 1883 in Munich. In 1842 he entered the Augsburg Art School, where he stayed for two years, later attending classes at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Karl Schorn and Philippe von Foltz. From 1855 he painted romantic landscapes and sentimental paintings but after a three-year stay in Italy, he turned to historical painting and the Italian genre. von Heckel was involved in the interior decoration of the 19th century Romanesque Revival palace - Neuschwanstein Castle - above the village of Hohenschwangau near Füssen in southwest Bavaria. The palace was commissioned by King Ludwig II of Bavaria as a retreat and in honour of RichardWagner. Due to its secluded location, the palace survived the destruction of two WorldWars and, until 1944, it served as a depot for Nazi plunder that was taken from France by the Reichsleiter Rosenberg Institute for the Occupied Territories, a suborganisation of the Nazi Party. King Ludwig II awarded von Heckel the Knight’s Cross of the 1st class of the Order of St. Michael and the Medal for the Arts and Sciences. €1,500-€2,000 (£1,290-£1,720 approx.)
