(75.6 by 104.1cm) Provenance: Collection of William Butler Yeats; Thence to Anne Yeats; From whom purchased by the present owner Literature: Published in colour on the dust jacket of Irish Writers and the Theatre edited by Masaru Sekine, Colin Smythe Ltd, 1987, and in monochrome on p. 35 of A Guide to Coole Park by Colin Smythe Deirdre of the Sorrows is a three-act play by John Millington Synge. It is based on Irish mythology and was unfinished at the time of Synge’s death on 24 March 1909. It was completed by W. B. Yeats and Synge’s fiancée, Molly Allgood and was first performed at the Abbey Theatre by the Irish National Theatre Society 13 January 1910, with Allgood cast as Deirdre. ‘THIS LOT HAS BEEN SOLD PRIOR TO AUCTION’ 9
