129 SPRING ONLINE ART SALE Ends Monday 28 March 2022 from 6PM 122 Claude Marks (English, 1915-1991) BRENDAN BEHAN, 1963 black crayon on paper signed and dated lower right; with newspaper clipping on reverse 18 by 16in. (45.7 by 40.6cm) Frame Dimensions: 25 by 22.5in. (63.5 by 57.2cm) Provenance: Whyte’s, 2 March 2009, lot 65; Private collection Born in London, Claude Marks was educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge. He studied painting and stage design in Paris and Salzburg before emigrating to the United States. During WWII he served with the US army. After the war he returned to America and took a Masters in fine art from the University of Iowa. As a painter he specialised in theatrical portraits and costume designs. Examples of his work are in the Fine Arts Museum of San Francisco and the New York Public library among others. He also wrote several books on art and lectures widely on art history. After his death in 1991 a memorial service was held at the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and a retrospective, titled `Theatre People and Places’, was held at the Royal National Theatre in London. A pen and ink drawing of Behan was purchased from the Claude Marks exhibition at the Thorndike Theatre for the Beckett Theatre at Oxford. €1,500-€2,000 (£1,240-£1,650 approx.)
