200 193 James Peele (New Zealand,1847-1905) SAILBOAT RETURNING TO HARBOUR, SOUTHERN OCEAN, AUSTRALIA, 1897 oil on canvas signed and dated lower right 16 by 26in. (40.6 by 66cm) Frame Dimensions: 25.5 by 36in. (64.8 by 91.4cm) James Peele was known for his scenic oil paintings. He was born in London, 1846 or 1847, and moved to Geelong, Australia with his parents in 1852. They arrived in New Zealand in 1865. He worked as a banker until 1889, when he resigned because of deafness. He began to make art professionally and moved to Australia in 1892, where he lived and taught in Adelaide and Melbourne until 1902, returning to New Zealand for the summer months.
