18 7 Dennis Malone Carter (1827-1881) A DESERTED VILLAGE oil on canvas 23 by 34in. (58.4 by 86.4cm) Frame Size: 30 by 41in. (76.2 by 104.1cm) Dennis Malone Carter was born in Ireland in 1827. He accompanied his parents to the USA in 1839 and, having received a little instruction in art, he began his career as a portrait painter and travelled over a large part of the country in pursuit of his profession. He eventually settled in New York and produced portraits and paintings of historical settings. In 1850 he painted a series of works illustrating Oliver Goldsmith’s poem‘The Deserted Village’, this lot being one example.
