(106.7 by 157.5cm) Provenance: RHA, Dublin; Private collection Exhibired: ‘180th Annual Exhibition’, RHA, Dublin, 24 May to 31 July 2010, catalogue no. 320 Stephen McKenna was born in London and studied there at the Slade School of Art. In 1973 he moved to Donegal. He has also lived in Belgium, Germany, and Italy. In the late 1980s, living in Italy and having absorbed the lessons of Roman and Etruscan art, Stephen McKenna produced the beginnings of a long series of paintings of interiors. They embody a harmony in living, working and thinking. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 1986. McKenna was President of the RHA from 2005-2009, during which time the building was reconstructed, to include the school and studios. The present work was painting during his final year as president of the RHA. McKenna died at his home in Co. Carlow in 2017. €15,000-€20,000 (£13,270-£17,700 approx.)
