Lord Kilwarden / Lord Norbury - Several manuscript legal statements relating to Carlow An Appeal by William Saul signed by Kilwarden in August 1801 and an Affidavit signed by the “Hanging Judge”Norbury in April 1817 and by Ed Beaghan, Wm Bambrick, Michael Keegan. Also Jury Returns for trials of convicts presided over by Norbury in July 1817. Among the charges listed are murder, highway robbery, conspiracy etc., also Estreatment Order from Kilwarden delivered in December 1799 naming Sir Charles Burton, Richard Morrison andWm. Humphey. Manuscript 6pp. 11 by 7in. (27.9 by 17.8cm) Condition: Very good, usual folds, all very legible. Lord Norbury (John Toler, a native of Tipperary ), was known as the hanging judge”. His most notable trial was when he acted as judge at the trial of Robert Emmet in 1803. Norbury continually abused Emmet throughout the trial before sentencing him to be hanged, drawn and quartered. Lord Kilwarden, Lord Chief Justice of the King’s Bench for Ireland was piked to death by followers of Robert Emmet on Thomas Street, Dublin in July 1803. He prosecutedWilliam Orr in 1797 and in 1798 Kilwarden made representation to have Wolfe Tone’s life spared. It was rumoured at the time that Wolfe Tone was his illegitimate son. By FELLOW OFFICERS HMS AJAX to LIEUT BROOKE FOR HIS ACTIVITY AT ABOUKE BAY 8TH MARCH 1801. Unique medal from the Naploeonic Wars. 2.25 by 1.50in. (5.7 by 3.8cm) Condition: Extremely fine. HMS Ajax was an Ajax-class 74-gun third-rate ship of the line of the British Royal Navy. She was built by John Randall & Co of Rotherhithe and launched on the Thames on 3 March 1798. Ajax participated in the Egyptian operation of 1801, the Battle of Cape Finisterre in 1805 and the Battle of Trafalgar, before she was lost to a disastrous fire in 1807 during the Dardanelles Operation. On 1 March, some 70 warships, together with transports carrying 16,000 troops, anchored in Aboukir Bay near Alexandria. Bad weather delayed disembarkation by a week, but on the 8th, Cochrane directed a landing by 320 boats, in double line abreast, which brought the troops ashore. French shore batteries opposed the landing, but the British were able to drive them back and by the next day Sir Ralph Abercromby’s whole force was ashore.
