90 History 175 1916-1936 collection of medals and other items of Eamon Duggan, one of the 1921 Treaty negotiators. EAMON S. DUGGAN (ÉAMON Ó DÚGÁIN, 1874 - 1936), Irish lawyer, nationalist and politician, member of Sinn Féin and Cumann na nGaedheal a collection comprising 1916 Rising Service Medal, engraved with his name and numbered 84 on reverse, with ribbon and clasp bar, in original box with complimentary slip, 1916 flash with original letter from the Department of Defence, January 1942, boxed, his War of Independence medal, engraved with his name and numbered 514 verso, with ribbon, clasp and Comhrac bar, in original box with complimentary slip, and the Irish tricolour flag that was draped on his coffin during his funeral in 1936. A unique collection relating to one of the five plenipontentiaries who negotiated the Treaty in 1921. Condition: Medals and flag extremely fine, boxes slightly distressed. Duggan fought in the Easter Rising in 1916. He was court martialled following the Rising and sentenced to three years penal servitude before his release in 1917 under general amnesty. He then served as Irish Republican Army Director of Intelligence. Duggan was elected to the First Dáil Éireann for South Meath in 1918 and was appointed chief liaison officer for Ireland. In October 1921, Duggan was appointed as one of the five envoys to negotiate a treaty with the British Government. He signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty at 22 Hans Place, London. In the post-Treaty provisional government, he was appointed Minister for Home Affairs and later became parliamentary secretary to the Minister for Defence and to the Executive Council.
