94 History 177 1916 Rising Service Medal to a Hibernian Rifleman. Officially engraved ‘122 Francis Devine’. Francis Devine died in 1939, two years before the medal was issued, hence the official engraving. Medals to the Hibernian Rifles are very rare. Condition: Good very fine. The Hibernian Rifles was a nationalist militia that organised in Ireland in the early years of the 20th Century, having its Dublin Headquarters at 28, North Frederick Street. The Hibernian Rifles were active in Dublin during the Easter Rising of 1916. In an article in the Irish War News, Patrick Pearse thanked the Hibernian Rifles for its contribution. Initially less than 30 Hibernian Riflemen participated in the Rising, from the first day in the GPO. Others joined later but overall the number was in the region of 60 to 80 so medals to Hibernian Riflemen are very rare.
