83 IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART · 2 OCTOBER 2023 AT 6PM 65 Rita Duffy PRUA (b.1959) MOTHER IRELAND, 1989 oil on panel signed lower left; signed and titled on reverse; also with University of California Berkely Art Museum label on reverse 48 by 36in. (121.9 by 91.4cm) Frame Size: 51 by 39in. (129.5 by 99.1cm) Exhibired: ‘When Time Began to Rant and Rage: Figurative Painting from Twentieth-century Ireland’, University of California Berkeley Art Museum, October 1998 through December 1999, catalogue no. 68 Literature: Steward, James Christen Ed., When Time Began to Rant and Rage: Figurative Painting from Twentieth- century Ireland, Merrell Holberton, London, catalogue no. 68, illustrated p. 259 This painting was a central image in my first solo exhibition after the completion of my MA and the birth of my first son. The central female figure has her arms filled with children and a smoothing iron worn as a head garment is firmly plugged into the church mains, removing any possibility of wrinkled thinking. Like most of my work it is personal and political, it stands as feminist comment on the lives Irish women lived and the prowling bishops who were intent on keeping it that way. This painting has been exhibited internationally and well documented as an important work in Irish contemporary art, sited by art historians’ essays and reproduced in numerous publications. Rita Duffy September 2023 €4,000-€6,000 (£3,420-£5,130 approx.) Click here for more images and to bid on this lot65
