Most leaves printed recto and verso, page corners numbered by hand in pencil, 301 pages total in two volumes, large folio, marbled boards, black gilt spines. The subjects of the caricatures are Gillray’s usual targets - King George III, Napoleon, English politicians, and foreigners in general. Some Irish subjects included. Many full page or double page, etched in great detail. A rare collection of this brilliant caricaturist. With the book plate of Robert Cassidy. 23 by 17in. (58.4 by 43.2cm) Provenance: Collection of Robert Cassidy; House contents sale, Glenageary, Co. Dublin, 1963; whence purchased by the present owner. Condition: Covers distressed, pages mostly very good - some light waterstains in Volume One, some foxing and a few tears, but overall most of the images are intact and in very good condition. James Gillray (13 August 1756 – 1 June 1815) was a British caricaturist and printmaker famous for his etched political and social satires, mainly published between 1792 and 1810. Many of his works are held at the National Portrait Gallery in London. Gillray has been called “the father of the political cartoon”, with his works satirising King George III, Napoleon, prime ministers and generals. Regarded as being one of the two most influential cartoonists of his time, the other being William Hogarth, Gillray’s wit and humour, knowledge of life, fertility of resource, keen sense of the ludicrous, and beauty of execution, at once gave him the first place among caricaturists. - Extract fromWikipedia.
