27 1867 (17 March) The Irish Republic ‘Fenian’ Bond for Twenty Dollars. Scarce issued note, with vignettes of Barry and Montgomery. With signatures of Sullivan and Scanlan in the plate. ’The Irish Republic is indebted unto John McNamara in the sum of Twenty Dollars redeemable six months after the acknowledgement of the Independence of the Irish Nation with interest from the date hereof inclusive at Six percent per annum payable on presentation of this bond at the Treasury of the Irish Republic.’ Numbered 2521 3521. 4.50 by 8in. (11.4 by 20.3cm) Condition: Vertical fold at centre, one inch split, otherwise very good. Printed by Continental Bank Note Printing Company of New York. These bonds were issued in America to fund the Fenian Rising of 1867. They were redeemed almost eighty years later by the Irish Government.
