Over 300 words in tiny but legible writing on a small card, presumably smuggled from the prison. Addressed to Miss Lawlor (Miss Bridget M. Lawlor of 2 Cavendish Row, Dublin). thanking her for roses she sent and giving a flavour of the wretched life O’Brien and his fellow inmates were suffering in Tullamore Jail, which was notorious for its harsh regime. He also refers to the censure of ArchbishopWalshe - “ They have put their foot in it deep enough by sending me that Bullsheen to get his horns knocked off and his tail pulled out by John Dillon”. 4.50 by 3.50in. (11.4 by 8.9cm) Condition: Slight soiling, very good and legible. Patrick O’Brien (c.1847-1917) was Irish Nationalist MP in the House Of Commons at Westminster and as member of the Irish Parliamentary Party represented North Monaghan (1886–1892) and Kilkenny City (1895–1917). He was Chief Whip of the Irish Party from 1907 until his death in 1917. O’Brien was very active in the Land Reform and Home Rule campaigns in 1887–90. He was imprisoned 5 times in 1888 and 1890, being given sentences totalling nearly 18 months.
