While in America he was responsible for a number of major public commissions including the Spanish American War Memorial at Springfield and a standing portrait of Robert Emmet for the Smithsonian Institute, a copy of which now stands in St Stephen’s Green, Dublin. In 1925 he returned to Ireland after receiving a commission to create the Lusitania Peace Memorial at Cobh, a project which occupied him for many years. In 1926 he completed a bronze bust of George Russell which he cast, chased and patinated himself making it the first bronze statue ever fully completed in Ireland.
