Officially inscribed ‘279 Edward Stafford’. Accompanied by notes on the Battle of Ashbourne and Ned Stafford’s part in it. Condition: Medal very fine, ribbon distressed, replacement ribbon included. On the Friday of Easter Week, 28 April, men from the 5th (Fingal) battalion of the Irish Volunteers, whose commandant was Thomas Ashe, conducted a raid on the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) barracks just north of Ashbourne. Ned Stafford was one of the Volunteers. After 30 minutes the barracks surrendered, but the Volunteers were forced to continue fighting as a large detachment of RIC constables that had arrived in Ashbourne by car. The ensuing gun battle lasted over five hours, until the RIC who suffered many casualties, withdrew. This was a unique victory for the Volunteers in the 1916 Rising.
