(55.9 by 71.1cm) Frame Size: 31 by 36in. (78.7 by 91.4cm) Provenance: Gift of the artist; Whyte’s, 19 September 2006, lot 38; Private collection Exhibited: ‘Recent Paintings by Murray Hayden’, Molesworth Gallery, Dublin, 4-14 October 1964, catalogue no. 3 (60 gns, reproduced on front cover of catalogue) Copies of newspaper cuttings and the 1964 catalogue included with lot. One reviewer referred to the present work as “a delightful story-book painting”, alluding to the literary origins of the work in Maeterlink’s 1892 Symbolist drama, Pelléas et Mélisando. The play was set in medieval times and centred on Pelléas’ love for his sister-in-law Mélisande. It was adapted for opera by Debussy in 1902. €300-€500 (£250-£420 approx.)
