216 210 Pádraig Ó Mathúna (1925-2019) SAINT OLIVER PLUNKETT CANONISATION, 1975 Irish silver salver; (no. 6 of 9 made) Dublin hallmark and artist’s mark on interior; signed and inscribed in Irish on base. 2 by 8.50in. (5.1 by 21.6cm) Provenance: Acquired directly from the artist by the present owner This salver was commissioned by Cardinal Conway, on the advice of Monsignor Peter Shields, Administrator of the Archdiocese of Armagh and friend of the artist. It was one of five offertory gifts from the people of Ireland to be given to Pope Paul VI during the Canonisation Mass of Saint Oliver Plunkett on 12 October 1975. Numbered 6 out of 9, of which one was given to the Pope, one was retained by the artist, and later donated to The National Museum, and the present example to the vendor, the remainder were gifted by Cardinal Conway and Monsignor Shields to some of the leading people involved in the canonisation campaign. It is signed and inscribed verso by the artist and is accompanied by a card made by the artist with postage stamps issued by Ireland to commemorate the canonisation, a cutting from The Irish Times describing the salver and a certificate of authenticity of the object. €1,000-€1,500 (£830-£1,250 approx.)
