(50.8 by 45.7cm) Provenance: Mullen’s, 2 March 2008, lot 25b; Private collection Born in Fife and christened Jack Hoggan – he later adopted his mother’s maiden name Vettriano – he worked initially as a mining engineer, teaching himself to paint during his spare time. In 1988 he submitted two works to the Royal Scottish Academy. They both sold on the opening night and led to invitations to exhibit from several dealers. The Solstice Gallery in Edinburgh gave him a joint show in 1991 and the following year he had his first solo exhibition, which sold out. The Corrymella Scott Gallery in Newcastle gave him his first solo show in England, following up with a second sell-out show in 1994. His reputation grew rapidly, with the sale of poster reproductions of his paintings fuelling interest in his work. In recent years posters of The Singing Butler, which features a butler and maid holding umbrellas on a beach, whilst a couple in evening dress dance between them, have sold in greater quantities than any other poster in the UK. In 1999 he exhibited some twenty works at the International Twentieth Century Arts Fair at the Armory, New York. Several dozen collectors flew over from the UK and bought all of the works within an hour of the show’s opening. Other shows have been held in Hong Kong and Johannesburg. Collectors of his work include Robbie Coltrane, Terence Conran, Madonna and Jack Nicholson, whilst he is also represented in the Kirkaldy Museum and Art Gallery in Fife. €2,000-€3,000 (£1,680-£2,520 approx.)
