WHYTE'S IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART MONDAY 2 DECEMBER 2024 FROM 6PM
9 IRISH & INTERNATIONAL ART · 2 DECEMBER 2024 AT 6PM 2 Attributed to Garrett Morphy (c.1655-c.1716) PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN IN ARMOUR oil on canvas; (oval) 26.50 by 23.50in. (67.3 by 59.7cm) Frame Size: 35 by 30.5in. (88.9 by 77.5cm) Morphy’s earliest works are from around 1676 and his style of portrait painting suggests he studied under the Flemish portrait painter, Gaspar Smitz, who painted the Irish aristocracy in the 1660s and 1670s. Morphy was a Catholic and was known to move between London and Dublin, painting portraits of established Catholic families, the colonial hierarchy and army officers. It is thought he may have visited the Netherlands and France as his paintings reflected the newest artistic trends. Morphy appears to have moved around constantly during this period, making it difficult to ascertain how much time he spent in Ireland. €5,000-€7,000 (£4,200-£5,880 approx.)
