95 IMPORTANT IRISH ART · 3 MARCH 2025 AT 6PM 69 Micheal Farrell (1940-2000) FAMINE SERIES- NATURE MORTE IRELAND, 1846 - THIS IS NOT FAMINE, BUT ORGANISED STARVATION, 1996 oil on canvas; (unframed) signed, dated, titled and inscribed on reverse 45 by 66in. (114.3 by 167.6cm) Provenance: de Veres, 30 March 2004, lot 83; Private collection This work, carried out by the artist during the 150 year anniversary of the second year of the Great Hunger, shares compositional elements with Black ‘47 a slightly larger work completed in the following two years. That work is held in Ireland’s Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University, Conneticut, USA. ”This is not famine, but organised starvation” is attributed by the artist to George Bernard Shaw. The figure pictured is Charles Trevelyan, who was charged with administering famine relief in Ireland. His inaction and personal negative attitude towards the Irish people are widely believed to have slowed relief for the famine. €5,000-€7,000 (£4,170-£5,830 approx.)
