106 177 1920 Terence MacSwiney cheque and calendar. Terence MacSwiney. Signed paid cheque for £1, drawn on Banc na Mumhan & Laighean Teo. [Munster & Leinster Bank], made out in Irish to ‘Father Ahern, The Cathedral’, dated 7.vi.1920, countersigned rear ‘John J. Aherne’. [with] Terence MacSwiney memorial calendar [1938], colour printed with verses by Brian O’Higgins, 10 ins x 6 ¾ ins. Terence MacSwiney became Lord Mayor of Cork in March 1920, after Tomás MacCurtain was assassinated by disguised RIC officers. He was arrested in August while attending a Volunteer meeting at City Hall and sentenced to two years in jail for possession of a military cipher. He immediately went on hunger strike, and died 74 days later in Brixton Prison. His martyrdom and death marked a turning point in the struggle for independence. Condition: Fine.
