With a handwritten note by Alice Holroyd Smyth of Ballynatray, Co. Waterford. Condition: Very good. Alice Holroyd Smyth; Catherine ‘Kitty’ Fleming; thence by descent to the present owner. The note reads: “April 11 1925. Erskine Childers’ pipe.....given me by Paddy Hogan, it belonged to W. Erskine Childers who was a ‘Republican’ & was cruelly beaten & then executed by the Free State in 1922. Paddy Hogan (of Youghal) was a prisoner in the same prison...He avoided execution by ‘good luck’ etc.” Signed ‘A.H.B.’ Alice Holroyd Smyth was a Republican sympathiser, despite her Anglo Irish background.
