Polished brass, with mermaid harp and Irish crown motif, in the shape of a heart. Extremely rare. 2.50 by 2.25in. (6.4 by 5.7cm) Condition: Fine. Founded on 24 April 1780, officers were: Colonel William Thomas Smyth; Major Samuel Canier; Captain Collins; Ensign Paul Ham. Inscribed to inner “Lt. Col. Pepper”, commanding officer of the Royal Meath Militia. Rare. In 1799 the Royal Meath Militia moved into Connacht and was quartered at Castlebar. Thomas Pepper of Ballygarth Castle, Julianstown, County Meath, became the regiment’s Lieutenant-Colonel on 14 June that year, and the acting commanding officer in the absence of the colonel on other duties. Pepper held the position for nearly 50 years. A portrait of Lt. Col. Pepper sold at Whyte’s – lot 124, 14 November 2009. Provenance: Descendant of Lt. Col.
