36 59 US Civil War. A Savage Navy percussion revolver, to a Lieutenant Portis in the 42nd Alabama Regiment. Marked for Savage, Middletown, H.S. North Patented June 17 1856, January 18 1850, May 15 1860. Etched ‘Lieut. Ernest Portis 42 Ala. Regt.’ Rare Condition: A few minor dents and other evidence of use, very good and attractive. Dr. Ernest A. Portis (1843-1903), of Suggsville, Clarke County, Alabama. Prior to the Civil War he attended Southern University. He was mustered into the 42nd Alabama Regiment. Company K, CSA, as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was wounded at the battle of Corinth. He was captured by the Union Army in April 1865. He qualified as a doctor in 1882.
