THE ECLECTIC COLLECTOR TIMED ON-LINE AUCTlON 6 APRIL 2025 61 106 1901-1902 King’s South Africa Medal with 1901 and 1902 clasps to an Honorary Major in the Connaught Rangers. The medal privately engraved ‘MAJOR H.W. ANDERSON. THE CONNAUGHT RANGERS’. Condition: Very fine with original ribbon. Captain and Hon. Major. Herbert W. Anderson Connaught Rangers. Medal Entitlement: QSA with bars for Transvaal, OFS and Cape Colony. He also claimed he was entitled to Wittenbergen bar but was not awarded it. KSA: he was entitled to the South Africa Bar 1901, but does not appear to be entitled to the South Africa Bar 1902. He apparently awarded himself the 1902 bar and recorded his rank on the privately engraved medal as “Major”. He appears of the Regimental List for 1902 as a Captain 3rd Bn. Connaught Rangers (Res. Of Officers). He resigned his commission in 1903. Wiltshire Times and Towbridge Advertiser for Sat. 1st October 1904 wrote: “Herbert Anderson, 40. described as retired major of the Connaught Rangers, was committed for trial charged with obtaining credit and money means of worthless cheques”. He was found guilty but insane at time of the offence and was detained at his Majesty’s pleasure.
